WATER SAFETY AND
LEARNING TO SWIM
Our goal is to ensure water safety and increase swimming skills through private instruction and fun, creative play. Learning to swim provides confidence in both children and parents. With the right commitment, almost all children can learn to swim and be water safe within two weeks.
WHAT TO EXPECT
FROM YOUR SWIMMER
All swimmers:
It is our philosophy that swimmers perform their best when they are solely focused on the lesson. We work with our swimmers Monday – Wednesday while parents wait out front. On the last day of each week, the parents are invited back to watch. The kids are super excited to showcase their skills and all they learned during the week.
Ages 0-24 months:
Infants can be amazing swimmers. These lessons are designed to show parents how to support your babies in the pool. We work on all aspects of swimming including blowing bubbles, paddling, kicking, floating, submerging, swimming, and (for the ones who want to) jumping in from the side. Introducing swimming at this early age reduces anxiety in older years and develops an early love for the water. Swimming with the infants is endlessly surprising.
Level 1: 2 year olds
Most 2 yr olds cry…A LOT! This is often their first experience swimming without the comfort of mom or dad. As difficult as it is for parents to leave their little one, we are most productive in the pool when mom is out of sight. At the end of 2 weeks, most 2 yr olds are able to submerge and retrieve objects, swim 3 ft across the pool unassisted, and hold their breath for about 10 seconds.
Level 2: 3-4 year olds
3 & 4 year olds make incredible progress during the two week sessions. They have so much fun learning to swim and gain a lot of confidence with their skills. Most kids at this age are able to swim on their front and back and independently climb out of the water no matter where they are in the pool. We also spend a good amount of time on pool safety.
Level 3: 5-7 year olds
This age group is ready to really learn the mechanics of the strokes. This includes side breathing, two types of backstroke, and the beginning stages of the breaststroke. These kids also love learning to dive. We also incorporate a safety day dedicated to recognizing swimmers in distress, basic rescue techniques, and water safety.
Level 4: 8 years and up
We can prepare kids at this age group for swim teams by refining strokes and improving stamina. We also work on entry dives and flip turns.
Adults: YES, we teach adults. It’s never too late to learn.
Resistant Swimmers:
At Kick n Swim we can sometimes get resistant swimmers. We pride ourselves in reinstating confidence to swimmers who have bad experiences by sharing our love for the water. This happens through creative play and structured lessons. We do take our time with these swimmers but we push them at the same time. We have an expectation for them to learn to swim and lovingly support them to reach this goal.
A FEW TIPS TO REDUCE ANXIETY
1. Stay positive
2. Don’t relive bad experiences
3. Think about signing up with a friend for
some added comfort in the water
4. Be patient…swim success will happen at all different rates
5. Take showers instead of baths to feel the water coming on your face
6. Balance the time spent in flotation devices as they
tend to give kids a false sense of security
7. Celebrate all successes!
